This is a controversial topic. So in order not to offend anyone let me say this. Everything in the Martial Arts realm is good in its own context, but when people preach that Judo is a realistic form of self defence or that a 1500 year old Karate system is the ultimate self defence then I have problem with it. If you love the martial arts and your instructor makes sure you know that it is an art or sport and you are aware of the limitations, great.
Being the author on several books that focus on the subject of kicking, I am often confronted by the following statement, “Kicking is ineffective at best in a real self-defense situation and is usually dangerously detrimental to the individual who attempts to use it on the street.” I very rarely hear this type of statement from practicing martial artists, especially from the practitioners of karate, tae kwon do, and kickboxing.
